What I Teach

With a gentle, can-do approach, I draw on 20+ years of experience performing and learning to guide my students in finding joy, self-expression, connection and fulfilment with their instrument. I meet my students wherever they are at in their musical journey.

I specialise in acoustic music, teaching songs from genres including (but not limited to) traditional and contemporary folk, folk-pop, folk-rock and indie folk.

UKULELE AND GUITAR

In my ukulele and guitar lessons, I teach song accompaniment, melodic playing, strumming and fingerpicking. I pay attention to healthy technique, and include theory where potentially useful. Singing is optional in these lessons.

SINGING

In my singing lessons, I help students to find their fullest, most joyful expression in their voice by helping the student connect with what the song means for them. I use imagery and warm up techniques that can help with breathing, posture and and balance, helping my students develop greater ease in their voice.

SONGWRITING AND COMPOSITION

I offer composition as an optional part of my lessons. Songwriting and composition are wonderful ways to practise the skills you have been learning in your repertoire.

CONCERTS

I run an end-of-year concert, with the intention of celebrating the progress students have made in the year. It's an opportunity for students to perform a piece they have been working on, enjoy hearing what other students have been learning, and meet fellow Magpie Music students. I can work with students to prepare with a song from their repertoire. It's not compulsory to perform in the concert, but participation is encouraged.

MUSICAL MAGPIES

The significance of the magpie in my music school’s name is that there are many magpies living around Malmsbury, and I enjoy listening to young magpies practising their song. I believe magpies and people of all ages and ability levels can learn to make music, and to cultivate a beautiful sound!
